Reading up on weapons, rounds etc is the best thing, then find a brand you like, use it at the range because if you aren't comfortable with the weapon you'll be less accurate. I do NOT recommend glocks for first time owners because they have no active safety and till you learn trigger discipline thats a bad idea.

Myself I knew exactly how far I could depress my rifles trigger while me and my buddies had our mouths over the barrels lol. I went into houses safety off and finger on the trigger and nothing happened because my trigger finger didn't move.

Look at maybe a USP if you have the money. Most mainstream brands will be fine, its all about how you adjust to the grip, how you handle the recoil etc. Might look at revolvers, don't have to work about jamming.
