Phil is a leader and friend to many in the motorcycle community. Lets all show support and help his wife Ann through this difficult time.

On September 2, 2009 Phil was riding his motorcycle on Nichols Road in Lithia, FL. A F-150 was turning left into Phil's path. The truck stopped and it seemed that he saw Phil and was waiting for him to pass. Then for some reason the truck decided to turn into his path. Instead of turning quickly to get out of the way, the truck slowly turned. Phil tried to avoid it but ended up hitting the truck almost head on. Phil always wears good gear. He had on an Arai helmet and suffered no head injuries at all. However, the injuries he did get were pretty severe. He had 2 aorta tears. This injury alone has an 80% mortality rate, and 50% don't even make it to the hospital. Phil was taken to Tampa General by helicopter. A heart surgeon happened to be on duty that night. The hospital said that the amount of blood he was given is the 2nd largest amount they have ever given anyone who survived. Phil's pelvis was crushed, left arm broken badly, and left knee dislocated. He was in a medically induced coma. They tried to wake him up the 3rd week of September but his blood pressure started to go up. They also discovered that he had a stroke while in the coma.

The fact that Phil made it to the hospital alive is nothing short of a miracle. There is a reason he is still here with us. He has a long road of recovery ahead of him, but we know he will make it and be the same Phil as before.

This event is being organized in order to help his wife Ann. Phil would do it for us. In fact I know he was working on something for a fellow rider on right before this happened.

The goal is to raise at least $1500. That is just a tiny drop in the bucket up against the medical bills and household expenses Phil's wife is facing. Lets show her how much the motorcycle community cares for her.

sorry to thread jack here, but i have heard Aorta tear a lot when it comes to crashes. is there any way that injury can be prevented?

A friend of mine died from a heart laceration after he wrecked. He wasn't wearing a helmet either, but that's not what killed him. Makes you think...

would be cool to see any pictures or anything from this ride. I'm glad the motorcycle community is able to come to this site and spread the word of compassion and support.

And aortic tears from impacts are a result of momentum transfer, so short of avoiding the impact all together, there is going to be a risk of internal injury. An update on Phil's condition would also be appreciated.
