Default Age Limit to ride sportbikes?

So do you think there should be a age limit to ride a sportbike. The reason I ask this is when I was 18 and I had a Sportbike I was stupid as hell. No gear doing 120mph down highways and such. As I have gotten older I have gotten wiser.. not such a smart thing to do.

I dont want to limit anyone from riding a sportbike but lets face it.. people lower then a certain age do a lot more risky events then someone that has gotten seasoned so to speak.

I ask this as my kids get older I know one day my son will want a motorcycle.. I wonder if I am turn him to like a dirtbike or quad or something.. i just think 18 is to crazy to have a sportbike.. its not so much the rider as drivers!

what do you think

You don't need a sportbike to be stupid when you are 18. I had an aircooled bug back then, and I did some unbelievably stupid shit on it, and we are talking about a car that would do 0-60mph in about 19 seconds.

What you need is education. So I wouldnt support an age limit, but I do support a tiered license system.

I got my first sportbike as a teenager. I was way more cautious then as I am now. Back then I could not afford a hospital bill and I did not have insurance. I was young and smart then, now I am old and dumb.

I was 19 and 20 with a 350z and an s2000 and 21 with a sportbike and I never did highly risky things.

If you're raised right and aren't a moron you won't have that problem

what do you think
a) I think that defining "sport bike" in any kind of effective legislative manner is is impossible, and will lead instead to industry-wide limits on all motorcycles

b) I think that any restrictions that would have a significant and measurable effect on motorcycle fatalities would have to be so draconian as to be a de facto ban

c) I think you should raise your kids to be responsible people yourself, rather than relying on legislation to do it

d) What does the risk of riding a motorcycle in traffic (per your vague allusion to "drivers") have to do with sport bikes anyway?

Absolutely, it is a legitimate safety concern.
I am surprised sportbikes have not been limited as of yet, you do not see F1 style cars driving around for a reason.

Yes but you can get in trouble one hell of alot quicker on something that can accelerate from 0-60 in 3 seconds and can actually fall over when you stop.

Because they cost more than 99% of use will ever make in a lifetime.

What do the numbers show? We've got a 30 year old report here and a newer report covering several European nations from 2004, so...HURTs, MAIDS, personal experience?

WK if you start him out young on dirt bikes, and drill gear & safety into his head, he won't know any other way. Discuss his options of what he might be able to get for a street bike well ahead of the time when he actually can, and preach 'start small', MSF, safety safety safety. That way if/when he wants to get a street bike he will be ahead of the game.

not really, you could make an open wheeled sports car at an affordable price fairly easily, example YouTube - atom car top gear Point being for a good amount of time there was a limit on street HP, not sure when that changed.
