Default Car top bike carriers question

Want to be able to take either my mountain bike or my road bike (bicycles here, not motorbikes!) with me on my business trips and looking at roof top carriers. Damn they're expensive! Anyone have any tricks, tips, manufacturers, besides the usual Thule and Yakima racks which add up with all the different parts you have to get. I already have the rails running lengthwise on my roof, but it looks like I have to get crossbars then rails for the bike, plus locks. Sound about right? Any ideas or thoughts appreciated!

I feel your pain GW. Cross bars for the Sienna are almost $300 up here

And without them you can't really use the side rails

I've got several different systems that I've used to carry my bikes - including on the roof. By far the most convienient and safest is something on the back via a hitch. On the roof, the noise and the time you crash it into the drive through will make you switch.

So my recommendation is anything that uses a rear hitch.

Oh, and the other things about being on the roof...

1) The time you don't have the fork in fork bolt and gouge the roof.
2) The time the bike falls to one side on the roof and a pedal gouges the roof.
3) The time the dirt and gravel scratch the roof from a tire that didn't make it into the rail.
4) The road debris that gets caught in the wind and flies into your bikes.

I still have all my roof gear and I can carry 4 bikes on the roof, 2 on the hitch, and 2 inside. So that's a total of eight bikes at one time...which I had to do when I raced Mt. Bikes.

Yeah, hitch carriers aren't gonna work for me. I need access to my trunk quite a bit when I'm traveling (Chrysler Pacifica). And I hear ya about the problems with roof racks, but I'm 6'5" so I'm pretty sure I can get my bike up and on the rails correctly. I found a "discount" rack company Proline Products Shipping Policy and Transit times. Car Racks and Carriers but looking at them it sure looks like a DIY in progress. I'm really tempted to make my own after looking at the drawings on this web link. I've tried Craigs list too, but most people know what they have with the Thule and Yakima rack systems and the cost is just a fraction lower than new.
