Thanks to Kev's suggestion to use a bootable thumbdrive I discovered ubuntu and recovered everything. The drive malfunction luckily wasn't on the user data sectors but in the OS.

Bootable disk versions of linux can achieve the same thing. Just for future ref.

Thumbdrive .. portable .. convenient. Ubuntu is a Linux derivative I believe isnt it? It's pretty darn cool I must say
