I'll agree with you. My kids will not have a phone, why do I need to call them non-stop? They can use a friends phone to call home or the friends parents land line to call home...wow just like I had to use to check in.

They can have a phone when they can buy their own pre-paid phone. I would never get them a smartphone. I remember as a kid in FL 7-8th grades pagers were not allowed...you were suspended. In Austria (Highschool) only a few kids had cellphones but they used them for emergencies not to call every tom, dick, and hairy. I remember thinking it was neat once borrowing an Austrian friends cellphone to call home to ask my mother if it was okay to buy the $200 new car battery for the Ford Explorer we had. I typically used pay phones in Austria to call home....they worked just fine although I will admit they were nicer then the ones here in this country.

As a dad of a 14yo girl I find her having a cell phone to be pretty damned handy, their not always at a friends or around a pay phone, most of the time shes at the park or going for a walk, personally I like being able to shoot a text "where you at?" or "hey something came up" or what have you. But I do live in a small town out in the middle of now where, where we can just let em run and not have to worry to much
