Yep and your told never to give it out unless its to the SS administration to collect benefits and what have you. Its a joke really...and if you refuse to give it good luck getting that credit card, car loan, home loan and what have you. heck my Community College ID was my SSN, I think they changed that NOW but yep thats what it was and that was only back in 1997 so not THAT long ago.
