I got a bad surprise last night

So I invite some friends (Harvey and Theresa) over last night for BBQ and watch the fights. I haven't had much time this past year for keeping in touch with friends, so I hadn't talked to these guys much in nearly a year.

Turns out July last year Harvey gots himself a fatboy. He had been dreaming of owning one for ever. A little back ground: Harvey has been riding motorcycles since he was a kid. Well it turns out last august Harvey was headed into town and damn deer came flying out of a ditch right in front of him (I know this spot and it's bad for that, you don't even know their there until their on the road) he broadsided the deer at 55. The bike is still in the shop with sprung forks and some road rash, Harvey spent 2 weeks in ICU because the shock caused his digestive tract to shut down, his left arm was shattered at the elbow, resulting in reconstructive surgery, about a 40% loss of mobility and 50% loss of strength.

So just be careful, never let your guard down, and expect the unexpected.

No Bueno but that is the risk that is taken. Knowing how to ride goes a long ways to keeping the rubber side down, that includes riding extra slow in area's where deer crossings frequent.

Dittos to Blurr. When Caffi and I were in Charleson SC recently, we almost poleaxed a deer in my MINI Cooper, we were on the Mark Clark I-526 expressway, doing about 70 mph. The Great Architect was looking out for us that night, otherwise we would have hit it. We couldnt have come closer and NOT hit it. Raining like all Billy-hell.

If I had been on my bike, it would have been the same. I would rather be lucky than good, any day.

Hope your friend knits back together well, Glad he didn't lose his arm, If there had been significant artery/vein vascular damage it would have had to come off.

The good news is, after a lot of physical therapy, he might get a lot of that mobility and strength back. I lost mobility in my left arm twice, and both times, I was able to come back from it. So the best of luck to him!

I also hope that this doesn't work to destroy him financially. He could be looking at tens or hundreds of thousands in medical bills.

Wow, time flies and you never know where it went. Stay in touch with friends, just as if they were family. I'm glad he's relatively ok and hope he bounces back to 100% from the rough up.

He's just itchin to get his bike back, for the most part things have returned to normal for him, as far as the medical bills go, his family has a pile of gas wells on their land so no worries there.
