She stood there with a totally blank look on her face because she had no idea what I was talking about. She did take me to where they had the walkmans. I explained what I was looking for and she still had no idea what I was asking for and even said she had never heard of them before.

I think that not only do big business sacrifice customer service for lower over head but they also hire people that could care less about even trying to learn the products they sell in the department they work in.

On a side not its funny that the local walmart installed a bunch of those self checkout things a year or so ago and in the past few months have done a total remodel of the store and took all of them out. Guess the savings did not equal the headaches.
Well, that's because you went to Wal-Mart. The end of the market that Wal-Mart serves is NOT the pay-for-customer-service end. It's the end where you put up with crap to get a rock-bottom price. You want a knowledgeable and helpful customer representative, go somewhere more upscale.

I do every chance I get. I hate Walmart and actually shop there a couple times a year but unfortunately in my town of 20k it either Walmart or a drive of 60 to 110 miles to get any place better which is what we do on a pretty regular basis. It is also one of only 3 grocery stores in a 15 mile radius of here.

People have to be smarter than the machine to use it...and we are talking about WalMart patrons here...

True and in this little town there are a bunch of loyal Walmart types running around. I know some that has to go to Walmart 4 and 5 times a day, hell I have not been in Walmart 5 times in the last couple years. As for the self serv check outs well I think to the spent more time broken than actually working but that could be that people were not smart enough to figure them out and had to keep getting live help.

That sucks. The one Walmart with them here, plus the grocery stores, drug stores, Home Depot, other places that have them have always worked great for me. Most people are happy to stand in line so they're always open, which means I'm in and out in no time.

Hummm must just be the level of the people shopping at our local store then. That does not surprise me after living here long enough.

I saw a Ferrari 360 Modena parked in a Walmart once. That was surreal.
