Man, I love my sailing club!
Notice I didn't say "yacht club", because it's not.
I pay $30 a month, and for that I get up to 40% off regular rental rates, plus all sorts of extra events and races, etc. Plus the $30 is applicable to any rentals or classes during the month. Saturday after next I'm going on a four-hour "checkout" sail of the Bavaria 42 cruiser.   There'll probably be 4-6 people on the boat, and I'll be handling the wheel for about an hour. For this four hour sail I'll pay $100, with $30 of that coming of course from my monthly dues. After the checkout, I'll be able to rent this yacht for $600 for a 24-hour overnight cruise - oh, but it'll be $500 because the check-out fee is applicable to the rental as well! If six of us go (the boat will hold 12 easily), that's under $100 apiece for 24 hours aboard a beautiful sailing yacht in the Pacific off of San Diego. Un-frigging-believable!  KeS |

When I lived in Ft. Lauderdale I was a member of a club like that. I paid an initiation fee and monthly dues and I had access to a boat when I wanted one. All the benefits of ownership without the hassle of maintaining a hole in the water

Exactly. I don't even remember what the initiation fee was, but *that* was covered pretty much by the free ASA 101 class you got with it.
Just to put this in context for the landlubbers, the *slip fee* just to PARK that 42' yacht in San Diego would run you $600-800/month. KeS |

Yeah, the expenses to be a member of Club Nautico (I believe it was) was about half of buying a boat when you figure dock fees and all the elbow grease needed to keep it clean and sea worthy

Sailing.
 Just about every weekend I was down at MCRD renting their 16' boats just to tool around the bay in. I got to play around with an IPY 40' in Charleston a few times. Enjoy your cruise.
