They were on a trestle bridge, so they had left themselves not much for escape routes. It doesn't say how long the bridge was, or how high, but going out on one of those is a risk, because if the train comes, it's not just step aside off the tracks, you're in the way, period. If it's low enough and/or over water, you might jump for it. If you have the presence of mind, you could lie down between the tracks and hope it passes over you safely. And that's about it.

trestling what a rush.

Actually merely stepping on the outside and hanging on is your best option in that case, but hollywood has pounded into our heads that running, laying underneath or jumping are the best option.

As for not hearing the train, that's really not likely. As the train comes through town, it blows its whistle regularly. I can't really say that the train goes really slow, but unless you're deaf, you're gonna hear it.

I grew up right next to a train track. We knew better than to be anywhere near any bridges, or hell, anywhere without an easy way off the track, if there was a train even hinting at coming nearby.

It's a damn shame. A tragedy. They were stupid and careless, but it's terrible that they paid for it with their lives. I remember jumping onto trains when I was 10 or 11 years old and never got hurt. Sometimes God watches out for fools.
