a) Cancers are highly complex, involving all sorts of the cellular mechanisims.
b) It is false that we "are no closer to figure out"; a lot of progress has been made in understanding many cancers. It's not a black-and-white either we fully understand it or we don't understand it at all sort of thing. Nothing is, really. It is a long process to understand something so complex, and that process gets done one step at a time.

It matters very much how one "gets there". If one "gets there" through the laborious application of science and rationality, then when one does "get there", one has built up a store of genuine knowledge to truly understand the "there" that one has gotten to. Otherwise, one hasn't.
