Where the fresh is
|
I was recently browsing at the bookstore and by chance, came across one of the most poignant books I've read. It is called The Photographer: Into War-Torn Afghanistan With Doctors Without Borders, and follows the experiences of a photojournalist with DWB during the conflict with the Soviets.
Here's why it's so intriguing: It is like a graphic novel (comic book for adults) but where half the cells are black-and-white pictures. The photojournalist who took them (Didier Lefèvre) told his story to his friend Emmanuel Guibert, a cartoonist, who filled in the missing parts of his story with drawings. It's an incredible medium and very effective at portraying the story. I highly suggest checking it out - also because it is a gorgeous book. The paper is very nice semi-gloss, some of the pictures are incredible, and it gives a different perspective on things. A well-put-together book. Next, to read Guns Germs & Steel. A NYTimes review and excerpt from the book are below. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/24/bo.../Hedges-t.html First Second - The Photographer - Gifts - 096

Nice!
I've been slogging my way through Roberto Bolano's 2666, and just started Thomas Pynchon's new book, Inherent Vice. So IV is fantastic, and hilarious. Not at all what I expected after trying to read Gravity's Rainbow years ago.
