The daughter of my mothers best friend passed away last night. Her and her husband were riding 2 up down their road when a dog ran out in front of them. He swerved and wrecked. I do not know how the actual wreck happened as I just know what my mother told me. Neither of them were wearing helmets and I doubt they had anything more than a jacket on. She died within minutes of the crash and he is recovering in the hospital. She was in her late 20's or early 30's and had a 5 year old. I will post more when I know more. I do know that the accident happened within a couple of miles of their home.

I'm always sorry when I hear preventable stories like this.
1) Hit the F'kn dog/cat/racoon/squirrel..it's just an animal and you're on a 400lbs machine that will obey Newton's laws.
2) Wear your gear.
Since I don't believe in god, I can't pray for her, but sit and sigh that another preventable tragedy just occured.

I agree that they should have been wearing gear. No word on how large the dog was or even if it was actually a dog. The people who called 911 said that he told them it was a large dog right before he passed out. The road they were on leads me to believe it might have been a deer. I have hit 2 on that road over the years in my trucks and my school bus growing up hit a few on that road. I need to find out where it happens because I know there is a couple who runs a shelter for great danes somewhere on that road too. I doubt hitting a deer or great dane would have had much of a different outcome. Still no excuse for not wearing full gear. The road is also mostly straight with maybe 3 curves in 6 miles or so so there is no telling how fast they were going. No word on if drinking was involved either.

I got a little more information.

The cops now think he swerved to miss a vehicle due to a set of skid marks close to the accident. Still could be a dog though. The only sure thing is he swerved to miss something in the road.

They were both sober. Neither had on a helmet. Just a jacket.

She did not die at the scene like originally reported. She passed on at the hospital 3 hours later due to severe head trauma. When he swerved something happened where she was ejected from the bike and her head hit something hard. The Dr's ruling is that a helmet would have saved her life.

She left behind a 5 year old son, a mother, a husband, and a huge friend and family base.

Lesson to be learned from this? Always wear a fucking helmet. A little discomfort is worth it to save your life. Why SC does not have a mandatory helmet law I do not know. They force us to wear seat belts while in cages and even gave cops the right to pull you over just for no seat belt but think is fine and dandy not to force riders to wear gear.

A helmet is considered discomfort...hmmm I always thought it was pretty dang comfortable but then again I bought a helmet that fit my head.

There are skid marks all over roads, how could the cop even say those were of something that they tried to avoid. I actually find that funny, shows how backwards some cops think...kind of like MR. Prick that stopped when my brother in-law wrecked and he tried to play Dick Tracy by asking me how fast we were going and then grabbing the speedo that was hanging there to see if it showed a speed, yeah buddy that will prove shit. I wish it was peg at the peg end...that little Hawk be impossible to do the speed the speedo can show...some cops watch too many movies.

So with that said, why not believe the guy who told someone at the time before passing out that it was a Dog. Maybe it was a great dane. Seeing as he was not killed, maybe when he comes too he will remember what he saw or said.

Oh, and remember the speed would not have to be great to be killed. Hell my bro was doing 30mph that day, and that landed him knocked out and in a hospital for a few days.

No lie!!! And a good point! Hell even when I drive the cage I miss having my helmet on. Though if I wreck it’ll be commuting on the interstate so I’ll get chopped in half by the guardrail on one side or the damn cabling in the median.

I agree that the right helmet is comfy, but that is the argument that most of the riders I know around here make. (these 2 never made that statement as far as I know) But it is true, most of the riders around here do not wear helmets because "they are hot" or "uncomfortable" I can honestly say that I have never been on a dirtbike, atv, or my old sportster with out a lid on my head.
