Default Anybody know anything about wr250f's

We turned one into a dual sport and now I want to re-gear it. I want to go up on the front sprocket so I drove over to the local cyclegear to get a new front sprocket and the guy looked at me funny and said it couldn't be done because it would rub the case. I don't believe him. Anyway, he was not willing to discuss the issuse or make any suggestions on how many teeth I can go up so....does anyone here have any experience with regearing a wr250f?

Does he mean rub the case or rub the guard? The guard I can see as likely, but in the mean time, have you thought of going with a smaller rear sprocket instead of a larger front one? You'd need to shorten your chain perhaps, but the end result will be the same. I think generally speaking 1 tooth on the front = 2 on the rear? So if you wanted to go up one in the front, go down two in the rear.

He said the case, I think if I were to go up a bunch it may hit. I was thinking up 2 in the front and down 2 in the rear, that would give me 20 more mph, I just don't know how that will affect the low end. I just don't want to buy an assortment of sprockets to find a combo that works well.

Have you tried searching a gearing calculator for the WR? There's a metric ton of gearing calculators out there. I know the WR is pretty potent for a 250, but I think going +2F/-2R will be a bit tall for it.

On my old Warrior 350 (4 wheeler) I went +1 / -2 and it was great for trail riding, but it really took the life out of the low end.

yep, that's what I'm afraid of. I guess I could go up on in front and see how that works and if I don't like it adjust the rear from there.

Just be ware if you find going up one in front is too tall, you can go up one in the rear to compensate BUT you may find your chain is too short then.

Do you think I would be better off going down in the rear to start? (for some reason I have a feeling that comments are going to be made about that statement)

I will be good

I'd opt for changing the front first myself, as it's usually an easier swap. Size it up good I guess and see what clearances you have to work with there. I have heard of people machining down the guard for greater clearance, but if it's so tight as to be rubbing the case then

The guy is smoking crack if he thinks it is going to rub the case. It may be close to the guard, but I can fit the tip of my finger between the sprocket and the guard. I think I'm going to go up one in front and see how that goes and if it isn't enough go down 1 or 2 in the rear. Right now at 50 the bike is screaming and you have to shift into second by about 5 MPH so I think I have some room to play with.

Sounds like your not anywhere close to stock gearing as it is. That bike should run 80 on stock gearing.
