Default General opinions on the Yamaha TTR series bikes?

I see TTR's on Craigslist all of the time for next to nothing. I'm not looking to be the next big supercross star, by any stretch of the imagination, but having something to cruise around in the dirt could be fun. I had dirtbikes in my teens, but it's been um... 15 years, or so since I've ridden one and I'll admit that I'm a bit more reserved when it comes to things that would potentially hurt like hell if I screw up. Thoughts?

My daughter started on a PW 50 at 5 and now she is on a TTR 90. She has almost outgrown it at age 9. We are looking for a full size (adult) 125 for her to ride now.

The TTR was a great learning experience for her and was a solid bike.

That's good to hear. I see both TTR 125's and 225's for pretty cheap and I wonder if I might be more suited to the larger bike, just because I'm used to more power from the ZX6R, even though I haven't ridden dirt in such a long time? Of course I could also do a 2 stroke 125 right around the same price range, if I'm willing to look at late 90's to early 00's. I just kind of like the idea about the TTR being 4 stroke, so if I'm out riding somewhere, I can sneak to a gas station and fill up without having to worry about premixing fuel.

you would be fine with that, I bet you would be fine with most any 4 stroke dirt bike.

That's what I'm thinking. The newer 4 stroke models are out of my price range that I'm willing to pay, which is mostly why I'm paying attention to the TTR.

Dirtbikes are like night and day from when we were kids. Or maybe it's because I'm old now... but the Honda 250 I rode scared the hell out of me.

I think you'll be fine on the 125... but I don't know how chunky you are

My boys have the TTR 90 and 50 which they're quickly out growing. They're great little bikes. The dealer started us out on the TTR 125 and 90 but their feet wouldn't touch the ground. I could ride the 125 comfortably and I'm 5'8 and around 170lbs

I'm 5'10" 190-195, so I should be ok with most bikes, size wise. My only real concern would be the power difference between the two and four stroke bikes. That and the fact that I'm turning 30 in three months and haven't ridden a dirt bike since I was 15 or 16.

The 125 I rode was pretty strong. A guy I work with says that the 2 stroke has more power and torque. According to him a 2 stroke 125 for example will out run a 4 stroke 125. I think its because the piston produces power on every stroke. Or something like that
